The Tongariro National Park is rich in cultural identity, it has dramatic scenery and unique land forms this combines to make the Tongariro Alpine Crossing

Rated as the best one day trek in New Zealand and listed by many in the top 10 day treks in the world.

Many who complete the 18.5 kilometre journey will tell you the climbs can be steep and the weather can be unpredictable.

You will need to arrange transport to the beginning of the Tongariro Alpine Crossing track and a pick up at the end of the day.

It's challenge, an adventure, an unforgettable experience.

Recommended hiking distance - Mangatepopo to Ketetahi. Often described as the best one day hike in New Zealand. The Tongariro Crossing provides an opportunity to experience some of the most scenic volcanically active areas of the park.

The track runs the Mangatepopo Valley to the saddle between Tongariro and Ngauruhoe Mountains.

It climbs to Red Crater (1886m), then drops down to the vivid Emerald Lakes. After passing the Green and Blue lakes the track sides around the northern slope of Tongariro, then descends in a zig zag to the Ketetahi Hut.

During winter conditions when snow and ice cover the track, we offer a package that includes transport and all equipment i.e. boots, clothing packs, crampons and poles.

For your safety guides will accompany you on the trip and will assess which routes to be taken to avoid the risks of avalanche and ice danger.

This means that during heavy snow or ice, trips may go to the summit of the track at the Red Crater and return.

Our guides will instruct you in the use of the hiking equipment. They are there to help should you need it and to take control over any difficulties that may occur.

* Hikers may choose to use their own equipment but full package rate still applies.

The Tongariro Alpine Crossing track passes over varied and spectacular volcanic terrain. In the presence of active volcanoes you can experience some of Tongariro National Park’s special gifts.

A cold mountain spring, lava flows, an active crater, steam vents, emerald-coloured lakes and magnificent views combine to make this an enjoyable and memorable trip.
