With 360 degree views, the loop track that circles Matiu/Somes Island in Wellington Harbour is a tranquil walk through nature and history.

Walking the track

This track takes you around Matiu/Somes Island, a wildlife haven occupied by Maori for generations that has also served as a military defence point in the past. It is an easy walk offering great views across the harbour to Wellington city, and the chance to see many native birds and insects in the wild.

Getting there

A ferry runs between Queens Wharf and Days Bay to Matiu seven days a week and from Seatoun and Petone on weekends.

Useful information

Toilets are found near the main wharf and behind the visitor centre (which is open between 8.30am and 5pm).

You'll need to bring your own food as there are no catering facilities.
