Porirua completely surrounds Te Awarua-o-Porirua Harbour, which is a popular spot for windsurfing, waterskiing and jet skiing. Some of the best things to do in Porirua include visiting Pataka Art + Museum, a museum and art gallery specialising in Maori and Pacific Island art, swimming at Te Rauparaha Arena Aquatic Centre, and shopping at North City Shopping Centre.

For those interested in the outdoors and adventure, there's cycling and mountain biking trails and walking tracks. Te Araroa, which is part of the national trail that stretches from Cape Reinga to Bluff, also runs through Porirua, as the Pukerua Bay to Paekakariki Escarpment Trail.

Iconic Aotea Lagoon is ideal for family picnics with a children's adventure playground, Adrenalin Forest for high wire challenges, and there are several popular beaches for safe family swimming.
