Only 20 minutes from Christchurch, the Waimakariri district is another mountain bikers’ favourite. On Banks Peninsula, the historic Little River Rail Trail is a great family ride. The city centre has cycle-friendly lanes and is only 10 minutes drive from the Port Hills, where the Summit Road, “Short Bays” and “Long Bays” are popular after-work and weekend circuits.

Whether it’s punting on the Avon or a picnic in the hills, Christchurch city has a romantic spirit that’s not difficult to find. For a memorable occasion take a drive up the Port hills, overlooking Lyttelton Harbour, the spectacular crater of an ancient volcano.
