Around the Mountains

The Around the Mountains Trail is one of the 23 Great Rides under Nga Haerenga, The New Zealand Cycle Trail.

Status: Sections Open

Grade: Easiest (1) - Intermediate (3)

Duration: 2-3 days

Total Length: 175km

The Around the Mountains Trail will begin with a steamship boat ride from Queenstown on the TSS Earnslaw across Lake Wakatipu to Walter Peak. The cycle trail then heads through Walter Peak and Mount Nicholas Stations, and along the Von Valley, Lake Mavora. It then follows the Oreti River and from Mossburn along the old railway line to Lumsden.

This 175km trail allows cyclists an opportunity to explore and discover some of New Zealand's most secluded and rustic rural settings at a relaxing pace without sacrificing the comforts of home.

Those eager to be transported back in time will appreciate the many historic townships and relics left behind by the region’s pioneers. Along the way you can expect to be welcomed by charming locals, served mouth-watering meals and told stories about the beautiful places they call home.

All while experiencing real, heartland New Zealand. In November 2010 operations began for one day guided and independent cycle ride products. The day ride offers cyclists a small taste of what's to come with a premium 5 day/4 night guided ride set to kick-off in November 2011.

Best time to ride

The trail’s easy gradient and great local climate make it a good ride all-year-round.
