Five Ways to Relax in Wanaka

Life can certainly be pretty frantic and so Wanaka is definitely the perfect anecdote to a busy city lifestyle. For starters, being in such a spectacular location - surrounded by water and mountains- is relaxing anyway, but we’ve a few other suggestions for you to enjoy. 

Riding a Bike

Go exploring on bike. There are some great cycle trails to suit all levels of riders and you’ve plenty of choice, with 750 km of trails!

An easy trail, The Outlet Track, follows Lake Wanaka’s lakefront through town then onto the Clutha outlet, where Lake Wanaka flows into the Clutha River.  

For a ride that is more undulating (and longer) head along the Glendhu Bay Track which will take you around 2 hours one way.  There are spectacular views of Mt Aspiring. 

Watch a Great Movie

Relax in comfy old sofas and check out the latest movies on offer at Cinema Paradiso. This is a great way to relax during the colder winter months. You can’t go past their world famous freshly baked cookies at half time. The smell is totally irresistible.

Take a Steep Walk

Your Fitbit will be doing overtime as you tackle a walk on nearby Mt Iron. In actual fact it is more of a rocky knoll, which was created as glaciers passed through the region millions of years ago. It is located on the edge of Wanaka and will take you around 1.5 hours to walk.

Roys Peak Track is definitely a bit more challenging. You’ll be rewarded though with the most spectacular panoramic view from the 1 578 summit. Allow around 6 hours to complete this exhilarating walk. Certainly something for active relaxers!

Explore the Lake

Wanaka the town is built around Wanaka the lake, which is New Zealand’s fourth largest lake. How about some SUP, kayaking, water-skiing on wakeboarding? All are on offer in Wanaka. You can even hire one of those quirky pedal boats.

The other way to explore the lake is by cruise boat. With a skipper at the helm you can sit back and relax. Perhaps incorporate a short nature walk on Mou Wahu Island and see some of New Zealand’s natural birdlife.

Have a Massage

It doesn’t matter whether you’ve been biking for miles, walking up mountains or flexing your arm muscles kayaking, a massage is quite simply the most ideal way to relax. Choose a relaxing massage or a deep-tissue massage to while away any aches and pains.
