There are several free activities and attractions in The Coromandel region which showcase the natural beauty of the area.

  1. Cathedral Cove: The area is only accessible by foot on a track starting in Hahei or by kayak/boat on the Coromandel Peninsula.  The beach and cove was featured in the 2008 blockbuster The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian and is a must see destination if you are in The Coromandel region.
  2. Coromandel Coastal Walkway: View the coastline from Fletcher to Stony Bay on the 7 km track.  You will see views of Great Barrier Island and the stunning blue waters along the shore.  The walk takes about 6-8 hours return.
  3. The Pinnacles: Journey through the Kaueranga Valley to see the native flora and fauna, cross swing bridges and see birdlife on the historic walk.  If you are staying overnight in a hut, be sure to book in advanced.   
  4. New Chums: Relax on the golden sands of New Chums Beach, which has been voted as one of the world’s top 10 beaches.  You can soak up the sun to take in the views of pohutukawas, surf the swells, or explore the sea life of the area.
  5. Hot Water Beach: Dig up your own personal hot pool to sit and soak in where the hot water from underground flows through the sand.  Make sure you time your visit during low tide.
  6. Karangahake Gorge: View the historic area which contains old mines, tunnels, and machinery from the 1800s.  One spectacular viewpoint is Windows Walkway where you can see views over the Waitawheta River. 
  7. Mount Paku: Enjoy the views above Tairua and Pauanui from Mount Paku on a walk which takes about 45 minutes return to the top.
  8. Opoutere Beach: Look out for the birdlife which are in the Wildlife Refuge in Whangamata.  You can walk the track to the beach and head to the estuary to see the birdlife on a walk which takes about 45 minutes return. 
  9. Twin Kauri Scenic Reserve: Check out the native kauri trees and take a small walk to see the two Kauri’s which stand next to each other and provide a great photo opp.
  10. Wentworth Valley: Take a two hour return walk on an easy trail to view the Wentworth Falls.  It is a great spot to stay overnight if you choose.
