The weather seems to come have right recently, better late then never, so we have been getting out and enjoying everything outdoors right here in and around Lake Taupo. Whether gardening at home, having coffee and fluffies at our favourite café, or taking the bikes along the Great Lake Walkway, all of it is so much more enjoyable when the sun is shining!
There is no better way to finish off a great day with the family then a game of mini golf and fish & chips on the beach so that’s just what we did.
After one of these great day’s out and about enjoying the sunshine, we decided to finish it off with a game of mini golf at Taupo Mini Golf on the lakefront and then a takeaway picnic on the main beach. Although mini golf with a 2 and 4 year old is not exactly a riveting display of sporting talent, it is good for a few laughs, not too expensive and a neat way to practice counting and writing numbers. Plus the Lake Taupo Mini Golf has some amazing views out over Lake Taupo across to the mountains of Tongariro National Park which are particularly stunning in the late afternoon before the sunsets.
What made it interesting was that the competitive nature of my four year old daughter emerged and her Dad had to concentrate on his shot so that he didn’t have to admit losing to his four year old – especially after she managed to sink a hole in one! If you are keen to make it a real golfing extravaganza with a little friendly competition thrown in for fun, especially if you’ve got older children, then the Lake Taupo Hole in One Challenge is just across the street. Between the mini golf and the Hole In One Challenge, the family competitive spirit is sure to come alive.
After mini golf , we ordered our fave family takeaway, fish & chips. There are some great takeaway options in Taupo but you can’t go wrong with fish & chips; we always order from LK’s on Spa Road or Shayne’s at the Nukuhau shops . Fish & chips make the perfect picnic food as there’s no need for plates or forks or knives – you and the kids can just dive in and enjoy – nothing more kiwi than that!
The main beach at Lake Taupo has easy off street parking, lots of picnic tables and is a magic place to watch the sunset. The view across the lake to the three volcanoes of Tongariro National Park is stunning. Just be careful not to get too lost in the moment or your fish & chips will be pinched by the possie of ducks who claim the beach as their territory. The kids love to throw the odd chip to the ducks to watch them scramble over it but my advice is to wait until you have had your fair share before you let the kids offer any to the ducks otherwise you might be surrounded for the duration of your meal which takes away the relaxation factor of the whole experience!
Sometimes the more simple the better and you can’t get much simpler or better than sharing a few family moments over a game of mini golf and a fish & chip picnic.
