Mount Holdsworth, west of the Wairarapa town of Masterton, is the gateway to several one-day and multi-day walks in the Taraura range.
Donnelly Flat, just a 20-minute hike from the carpark and campsite, is easily reached tranquillity amongst pretty streams, bush, bird and insect life.
The track passes Holdsworth Lodge on a large flat grassy area. It’s ideal for families or groups staying overnight in bunkrooms. Beyond the lodge, a steel bridge spans the Atiwhakatu Stream, perfect for throwing stones into the water. Children can see the swift flow while native fantail birds flit amongst the branches.
The well sign-posted trail passes under a canopy of mixed kamahi, red beech and silver beech trees. Marvel at native rimu, kahikatea, miro and northern rata towering above. The track opens to the large grassy area known as Donnelly Flat. It’s an attractive picnic spot on the river bank with fireplaces and toilets.
The track passes a sign to Rocky Lookout on the Gentle Annie Track – a popular day walk for another time.
Turn off State Highway 2 on to Norfolk Road, 2km south of Masterton. This leads to Mount Holdsworth Road. Holdsworth is 15km from State Highway 2.
