The goal of Wingspan is to protect and restore our birds of prey into everyday life. The endangered falcon is reared and then released. In 2013, 3 chicks were released into Rotorua City from the museum. This was the first release into a city environment. In 2014, chicks were released in Martinborough to build up the population, thus reducing pests in the vineyards. Wingspan also protects the morepork, Barn owl and swamp harrier. All birds can be viewed at Wingspan.
A real highlight at The Centre is the flying display of falcons and other birds of prey over the surrounding farmland each afternoon at 2pm. They practice the age-old art of falconry as a method to prepare birds for release into the wild. Visitors can get close to the birds and even wear the gauntlet and experience the thrill of a falcon landing on their arm.
