Fiordland is a walking and hiking paradise, and home to three of New Zealand’s Great Walks along with numerous day walks.
The Milford Track is New Zealand’s most famous walk. This 53 kilometre journey takes you to pristine lakes, enormous valley views, and the tallest waterfall in New Zealand.
Thirty-two kilometres of hiking trail winds high into the sky amidst soaring mountain peaks on the Routeburn Track, which links Mount Aspiring National Park with Fiordland National Park.
The Kepler Track, a 60 kilometre panoramic hike, is designed to show off all the best features of Fiordland – enjoy mountains, native forest, waterfalls and glacier-carved valleys. All of the tracks have camping or hut accommodation options, which you can book on the Department of Conservation's website(opens in new window).
The Routeburn Track is one of the shorter Great Walks. It links Mount Aspiring National Park with Fiordland National Park, showing off mountain peaks and jewel-like lakes along the way.
The Hollyford Track is a 4 to 8 day walk from the mountains to the sea at Martins Bay on the West Coast and can be walked all year round (weather dependent). Guided options are available.
The Hump Ridge Track is a 3 day loop track along the coast and through native forest. Though less well-known, it is just as stunning as the Great Walks.
Whichever walk you choose, take along an experienced guide to explain the unique flora and fauna and techniques for surviving in the bush.
Lake Monowai is a very peaceful paradise at the edge of Fiordland National Park.
The Lake Gunn Nature Walk is an easy 45 minute loop walk suited to all ages and accessible to wheelchairs.
Step into the dramatic Hollyford Valley and enter a world that looks the same today as it did thousands of years ago.
If you want to immerse yourself in the mountains, valleys and absolute remoteness of Fiordland, the Dusky Track is calling.
