The Tannery

With roots as an old industrial city precinct, The Tannery has morphed into a boutique shopping emporium that's full of eclectic and modern offerings. Known as a hub of creativity that's steeped in local history, shops here are independently owned by locals with passion and flair. Discover well-tailored, stylish clothing and products at Alchemy Equipment, peruse the New Zealand-made garments of Kiwi label KILT or soak up the gorgeous uniqueness of fashion boutique Where the Fox Lives. Tired legs? Sit down for a craft beer and hearty lunch at The Brewery, known for crafting beer the same way it was made hundreds of years ago.

The Colombo

Inspired by the distinctive shopping and eating establishments of Europe, The Colombo combines Christchurch's iconic and distinctive character with effortless European flair. A classy shopping precinct that's also home to an arts cinema and decadent cafes, restaurants and bars. Head here for a taste of the city's leading fashion stores and brands. New Zealand designed and made brand Repertoire is known for its elegant fashion with an edge, famous label Anna Stretton is a leading force in Kiwi fashion, while Skout Gifts is a great place to purchase something quirky and unique for someone back home. Once you've worked up an appetite, discover delicious international flavours at the European-inspired food hall or pop into the Belgian Beer Cafe for a hearty pub-style lunch.

Contemporary Art Galleries

Quality and diversity is alive and well amongst Christchurch’s art galleries, with a large number of exhibition spaces dotted throughout the city.

Admire the work of local and national artists such as Jason Greig and Michel Tuffery at Chambers241 on Moorhouse Avenue; while stunning works in acrylic, enamel, pencil, aluminium and gold leaf can be found at the Jonathan Smart Gallery on Buchan Street. Check out the country’s leading contemporary jewellers at The National on Moorhouse Avenue - iconic artists that exhibit here include Areta Wilkinson, Kobi Bosshard and Karl Fritsch.

Open Air Markets

For an authentic Canterbury experience, there’s nothing like chatting to an artisan producer at an open air market.

  • The charming Christchurch Farmers' Market is held every Saturday at historic Riccarton House. Indulge in locally made meats, cheeses, and delicious locally made goodies. The Sunday Artisan Market is held in the same place on Sundays, and includes locally made arts and crafts in addition to ready-to-eat foods.
  • No visit to Christchurch is complete without a trip to Akaroa, the charming French-inspired town on the Banks Peninsula. The Akaroa Farmers' Market, held every Saturday from spring to autumn, is known for its delicious cheeses, olives and nuts.
  • Just north of Christchurch is Waimakariri & Waipara Valley, where a farmers market runs every Friday morning in Ohoka. The Waipara Valley Farmers' Market is located in Amberly first thing every Saturday, or head to Oxford on a Sunday morning for stalls bursting with delicious local fare for brunch.
