Fascinating Fossils and Rattling Rocks in Waitaki

Touring the Vanished World Trail allows stops to enjoy a variety of scenery, a wide range of geology and to discover what is hidden in our rocks.

Vanished World Incorporated and the Department of Geology, University of Otago developed the Vanished World Trail from beach to mountains to showcase the spectacular geology and fossils of the Waitaki District.

The Fossil and Geology museum at Duntroon explains the geology and tells the story of our fossil record. It focuses on the origins of New Zealand and the evolution of our penguins, dolphins, seals and whales.

Here you can try extracting a fossil in our “Dig a Fossil” room.

Information Boards at Moeraki Boulders car park, Waianakarua Bridge opposite Mill House, Oamaru’s Lookout, The Blue Penguin Colony and Duntroon, 36kms up SH83 towards Kurow, give directions and information for your trip into Deep Time.

Trail Guide brochures are available at Oamaru I-site, Vanished World Museum and Dunedin’s I-site and Museum of Otago.
