Artistic endeavour has flourished in Dunedin, especially since the establishment at Otago University of the Robert Burns (literature), Frances Hodgkins (visual arts) and Mozart (musical composition) Fellowships in the 1950s and 60s.
A wonderful example of collaboration between arts fellows was the monumental wall hanging that Ralph Hotere (Frances Hodkins Fellow, 1969) produced for the foyer of architect Ted McCoy's equally monumental 1980 Hocken Building. Hotere's work incorporated the text of 1969 Burns Fellow Hone Tuwhare's poem Rain.
