Love the thrill of careering down a forest track or along a rocky ridge? Then New Zealand is just the spot to indulge your mountain biking passion.
New Zealanders have taken to mountain biking with a passion. There are mountain bike trails everywhere. The 42 Traverse in the Tongariro National Park is fast developing a reputation and for the real adventure junkie there’s all-day downhill with alpine heli-biking.
But mountain biking doesn’t have to mean full-speed risk to life and limb riding. Cycling is a wonderful way to cover ground, giving you the ability to stop when you like to experience the wonders of the natural world. You can explore a coast road or wander a wine trail; go cross-country or follow an old rail track. You have the freedom to do it as you wish; with the pleasure of your own company or sharing the wonders with a companion.
A great experience for the passionate mountain biker is sections of the New Zealand Cycle Trail. Encompassing 19 Great Rides that stretch the length of the North and South Islands, this initiative showcases New Zealand's spectacular great outdoors through easily-accessible, free trails dotted throughout the country. The trails are well-maintained and have been built with all levels of riders in mind.
Another great option is taking a tour. Often, these tours will include parts of the Cycle Trails, and will include bike hire, riding tips and a porter service to carry your luggage from one stop to the next. All you have to do is cycle and look at the scenery. And that’s not too hard to do, is it?
