On this hiking experience, there's a range of landscapes, from rivers to expansive tussock downs, and from lush forests to nikau palms and the roaring seas of the West Coast.
The Heaphy Track hosts a variety of native birdlife. Robin, weka, tui, and woodpigeon often appear. You may even see large parrots - kea and kaka, or even the whio / blue duck. Listen out for the great spotted kiwi at night.
The track is well formed and suitable for fit, well-equipped people. Accommodation can be booked at Department of Conservation (DOC) huts or campsites. Shorter day walk options or overnight hikes from either end are also popular.
