Visiting Nelson is always an absolute pleasure. With its high sunshine hours and sparkling white sand of Tahunanui Beach, it's reputation of a summer beach holiday resort is well deserved.
But another aspect of Nelson is its vibrant arts community. The World of Wearable Art and Classic Cars Museum has long since made its debut and is now well established as an outstanding arts showcase for New Zealand. More recently however, thanks to the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit movies, Jens Hansen has made his name as "The Ringmaker" as well as jeweller.
Leafy Trafalgar Street with its plethora of outdoor cafes, culminates at the distinctive Nelson Cathedral, but just one block away, nestled on a very unassuming corner is this world famous creative gem. It's the workshop of Jens Hansen, gold and silversmith. This acclaimed jeweller is the designer and manufacturer of this very simple but recognisable ring made famous by the movies and inside the shop is an oversized replica to photograph and hold. Feel how heavy it is, being made of stainless steel smothered with gold.
Authentic custom creations, with Elvish engraving, are available to purchase, making a LOTR ring a very sought-after keepsake of a New Zealand holiday.
As well as Lord of the Rings themed jewellery, Jens Hansen also creates magnificent custom made pieces, including his new "Golden Kiwi", a solid gold pendant of modern Kiwi design. The perfect adornment to the classic Little Black Dress. One was recently presented to Prince Charles and Camilla on a recent visit to Nelson.
So, when you're in Nelson, take the time to appreciate this little corner of creativity with the big worldwide reputation. For a small store it packs a big punch of creativity.
