Check out the Ministry for Culture and Heritage's audio guide to Tarawera in the Video tab.
A remote spot on the Napier–Taupō road, Tarawera was first a Māori village, then a military stockade and an important coach stop. Author Katherine Mansfield – then aged 19 – spent a night in Tarawera in 1907, and enjoyed bathing in the nearby hot springs.
Roadside Stories are a series of audio guides to places of interest on major road trips in New Zealand. Each guide tells the story of an attraction along the way – its people, its history, its cultural and natural significance.
