Bendigo Historic Reserve (Time: 45 minutes or 1.5 hours or 5 hours)
Bendigo Historic Reserve is a history lover’s paradise. There are so many fascinating things to discover on each of the walks, not to mention spectacular views.
Access to all of the walks is from the car park at Welshtown. To get to Welshtown, take the Bendigo Loop Road off SH8 and head up the hill at the site of the Bendigo township, where there is an information kiosk. Welshtown is 4km up the steep road.
Choose a walk depending on how long you’ve got and how far you’d like to go.
Bendigo Mine Loop (45 minutes, 1.5km)
This easy walk takes you around the remains of buildings, roads, old mine shafts and battery sites. You follow the yellow markers around the area, stopping to read about the relics along the way.
Aurora Track (4km, 1.5 hours)
This track is well worth the extra effort. You’ll see some interesting relics at the site of Logantown as well as a change in your surroundings as the track goes through unique Kanuka Forest. Follow the marked track from Welshtown car park down to Logantown, then take the track to the right to Aurora Creek and follow the markers into the gully, finally returning to the car park.
Kanuka Track (10km, 5 hours)
This is a fabulous walking/tramping track, mostly through Kanuka Forest. The track is steep and rugged so does require more time and energy. It loops from a signposted entrance near Logantown following orange markers up to the skyline ridge. The views from the highest points of this track are incredible and you can see all the way from the Old Woman Range through to the St Bathans Range.
