Queenstown is quite simply mountain biking heaven. This summer (2011/12) has seen the first full season of Skyline gondola assisted downhill mountain biking at the Queenstown Bike Park.
Right on the edge of the town centre, with bike hire and servicing at both the bottom and the top of the hill, this has proved incredibly popular. Not for the faint-hearted though as the hill is pretty steep!
More riding for the adventurous is available a bit further along the valley at Wynyard with Big Dream and Mini Dream - a great place to get air-born if that's what you're into.
Still further along the valley is the largest area managed by the local volunteers of the Queenstown Mountain Bike Club - 7 Mile.
Here there are a network of tracks of varying levels and abilities. The club sell a map through the local bike shops ot help you plan your adventure.
More fun and games can be had at the Gorge Rd Jump Park just on the edge of town - go and watch even if you daren't have a go yourself.
There are some incredibly talented riders resident in Queenstown throughout the season.
If all of this sounds a bit extreme, never fear. The lakeside track to Frankton is a beautiful, flat and easy ride.
You can continue around towards Kelvin Heights and around to Jacks Point to make a good half day trip. If you want to go in the other direction, the Wakatipu trail network is almost complete.
Already you can ride most of the way from Queenstown to Arrowtown without going on the road. There's also a great stretch of track along the Gibbston valley starting at the AJ Hacket Bungy car park.
Bike hire is available in a massive range of bike shops and specialist hire shops but if you want to bring your own it is worth checking for accommodation that has bike storage, cleaning and maintenance facilities.
Hurleys of Queenstown has all this and more - close to the CBD and with spa baths and saunas to help your muscles get over the efforts of the day.
Even if you can't stay with us for the whole season, if you like getting on a mountain bike, you'll want to give it a try in Queenstown.
