Take as long as you like, from the foot of the Southern Alps to the shores of the Pacific Ocean.
Aoraki/Mt Cook is New Zealand’s highest mountain and one of many stunning sights you will encounter along the Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail(opens in new window) (A2O). But there's more to this ride than jaw-dropping scenery. Off the bike, you can visit blue penguins, taste local wines, and soak in a hot pool under the stars. Welcoming hosts, great accommodation, and excellent food make A2O an unforgettable cycling holiday.
The Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail is divided into nine sections across mostly easy terrain including canal paths, cross-country track, quiet backroads and old railway lines.
Whether you chose a short ride or the full, multi-day A2O adventure, there are plenty of companies offering bike hire, shuttle services, and fully inclusive, guided tours. And plenty of places for you to stay.
Suitable for e-bikes (there are plenty of places to recharge), this particular Great Ride of New Zealand(opens in new window) starts at the foot of the Southern Alps. It’s well signposted, so you’ll never get lost. Better yet, it often passes small towns that are handy for a quick pit stop or recovery overnight.
Admire the golden tussock, surreal blue lakes and staggering mountain ranges on your way to Twizel and Ōmarama. Then continue until you reach the Waitaki Valley, which is home to two hydro-lakes and one power station. You can take a break in the rural towns of Otematata, Duntroon and wine-soaked Kurow.
As the trail reaches the lower valley you’ll pass through vineyards, a lavender farm, Takiroa Māori rock art site and limestone formations known as the Elephant Rocks(opens in new window).
Following a historic railway line, the trail then heads down to Oamaru, a port town known for its steampunk culture, Victorian architecture and resident blue penguins.
