Outdoors too wet and windy today?

Planning to do the Tongariro Alpine Crossing or going skiing on Mount Ruapehu and the weather isn't looking too good? Try these alternatives instead...

The Central North Island of New Zealand is known for its spectacular scenery and outdoor aventures.  But what do you do if the weather is too miserable to go outside or really there is not much point walking on the inside of a cloud all day?  Well, surprisingly, there are a few little gems to be discovered in and around Turangi:

While there isn't much shopping in a small town, check out the mall for a couple of outdoor supply stores if you need to find a good rain jacket.  The art gallery is worth looking into - a Co-Operative of local artists selling their creations, most are uniquely New Zealand.  A couple of doors down is a Weaving Wananga (school) where you can watch locals learning to weave flax and purchase some pieces of authentic Maori Weaving.  At the other end of the mall is the local library with FREE Wi-Fi, some computers to use and a cozy chair by the window where you can sit down with a good book.

If your kids drive you crazy, throw them into some water - Turangi has an indoor Swimming Pool and the Tokaanu Mineral Hot Pools close-by - or hang them upside down at the local rock climbing wall.  There is a fantastic Adventure Mini Golf Course too (each hole is a part of the "Round the Mountain" journey) and while this is outside in the rain, it is still do-able with a rain jacket (or someone holding an umbrella).

And when it is really cold and wet outside and you feel like snuggling up inside and relaxing instead, visit the Tongariro MediSpa.  Soak in a private hot pool or visit their sauna before going in for a massage or All Natural Facial - the perfect antidote to the Great Outdoors...
