Bay of Islands - a must do!

Bay of Islands – a spectacular place and a must do on any New Zealand travel itinerary.

Paihia is the main tourism destination in this region and is a great base to explore this amazing part of New Zealand.  Paihia is based right on the water and from here there are an abundance of tours which you can take.

Whether you fancy a day trip to Cape Reinga (the very tippy top of the North Island) including sand dune surfing, a cruise to the famous “Hole in the Rock”, a high speed boat ride, dolphin watching, a trip out to some of the Islands that make up the 144 in the Bay of Islands, a ferry ride to Russell (NZ’s original capital city), a day trip to Kerikeri to see the famous Stone Store, or a day at the beach to work on your tan you can do it all from Paihia!

If you have your own wheels this is a great advantage (just like any place) as you can explore at your own pace and have the ability to venture out to explore surrounding towns.  Places such as Kerikeri are only a 20 minute drive from Paihia.  Cape Reinga is a real treat and day trips on busses to the tip are great too - but if you want to take your time and even camp overnight on the way you can make a real adventure out of it.  Paihia is a great base, but having your own wheels to explore is definatley a bonus!

Finding a place to stay in Paihia is not a challenge with something for everyone however It is definatley recommended to book in advance should you wish to visit the busy summer months.  Accommodation options in Paihia range from campgrounds & backpacker hostels to luxury hotels & resorts. 

Feeling hungry?……..Don’t worry, there are heaps of cafe’s, restaurants, ice-cream shops & bars to pop into to make that tummy of yours stop grumbling & there are enough places to choose from to suit any budget. 

You will definatley be able to spend at LEAST three days in the Bay of Islands and you wont regret it, thats a promise!
