Dunedin's Jewish inheritance

Dunedin is a centre of arts and learning. The city's cultural institutions owe much to the vision and support of a handful of early Jewish families.

Poet and editor Charles Brasch made notable bequests to the Hocken Library and helped establish the University of Otago's Burns Fellowship.

Mary, Dora and Esmond de Beer took a most benevolent interest in the Dunedin Public Art Gallery; while Willi Fels paid the salary of the University's Anthropology lecturer and gave more than 80,000 items to Otago Museum.

Remarkably generous, the above individuals belonged to one extended family.
