We are the western gateway to some of the most rugged and challenging tramping in New Zealand - the mighty Tararua Range. You can also take a day trip into these ranges and explore the foothills. Whatever length of trip you are planning please be prepared - the weather can change in a flash, often leaving ill-prepared trampers stranded.

Accommodation is by way of a classic kiwi backcountry hut. Services are basic and trampers are expected to be fully self contained. More information here

The Southern Crossing – 2-4 days (from Otaki Forks)

Day trip to Field Hut (from Otaki Forks)

The Northern Crossing – 2-5 days (from Levin)

Overnight trip to Waitewaiwai Hut (from Otaki Forks)

Overnight trip to Waiopehu Hut (Levin)

Be prepared.

Check the weather before you go.
• Tell someone where you are going and what time you expect to be back.

• For Field Hut, and the Southern Crossing, sign the visitor book at the Rangers office at Otaki Forks.

• Take map, raincoat, hat and gloves, compass, plenty of food, and your camera – the scenery is awesome.

All trampers must buy backcountry hut tickets which are available from i-SITES or DOC offices.

Contact our i-SITE Visitor Information Centres for more details including bus, train, and tide timetables; or the latest in other activities and events. They are located in Paraparaumu, Otaki and Levin.
