Robin, weka, tui, bellbird, and woodpigeon are a few of the native birds which are readily seen on the Heaphy Track.
You may also see the large parrots - kea and kaka, the smaller parakeet and the blue duck. With luck and a bit more commitment it is possible to see, or at least hear, the great spotted kiwi.
The Heaphy Track, located in Kahurangi National Park at the north-west corner of the South Island, is the longest of the DOC Great Walks and usually takes 4 - 6 days to walk. If walking for that long isn't your cup of tea though, day or overnight walks from both ends are often popular.
The track crosses the Park’s range of landscapes, from rivers to expansive tussock downs, and from lush forests to nikau palms and the roaring seas of the West Coast.
With numerous huts and campsites on the track, there are options for all.
The track is well formed and suitable for fit, well-equipped people and there are bridges over all rivers and major streams.
Check out the DOC website www.doc.govt.nz to make a booking, or for more information.
This popular walk has been reviewed by independent travellers on Rankers. Read what others have to say about the Heaphy Track.
