Romantic getaway in Wanaka, staying at Edgewater and enjoying the most romantic locations in the region.
My boyfriend and I had been wanting to visit New Zealand for the longest time now and saw the awesome trans-Tasman deals so we decided to pack our bags and take off on a romantic getaway!
The Sydney-Queenstown direct flight was sooo quick and easy – we couldn’t believe we could get to New Zealand so fast! We stayed in Queenstown for a couple of days and exhausted ourselves with all the adventure activities there then decided to hire a car and drive to Wanaka for a couple of days, via the Cromwell and Bannockburn wine trail.
We thought we were so lucky with the weather but it turns out that in these southern regions, autumn is the most tranquil of all the seasons – every single say saw clear blue skies, flat calm lakes and the most beautiful colours that words just cannot describe! The grape harvest was well underway while we stayed so the vineyards from Queenstown to Wanaka were a hive of activity all the way along.
As we arrived into Wanaka we were greeted with yet another breath taking view – you never get sick of them in this part of the world – of the township nestled on Lake Wanaka itself. Seeing as this was our ‘romantic getaway’, we wanted to stay right on the lake so the information centre suggested Edgewater – and it turned out to be perfect in every way – they even offered a ‘Romantic Escape’ package which we thought was pretty funny and absolutely ideal for us!
The minute we arrived, we were greeted with a bottle of bubbles – and cute chocolate hearts on our pillows (which my boyfriend stole) in the most gorgeous room that looked across a lovely lawn and right onto the lake. We could literally open our doors and stroll to the water’s edge in about 30 seconds! The kingsize bed looked amazing and there was a separate living area too, so the whole room felt nice and spacious.
Even though we only had a weekend, we managed to pack a lot in – and really enjoyed getting outdoors and walking up Mt Iron or biking along the water’s edge into town to enjoy a leisurely coffee. I, especially, loved Edgewater’s spa and spent a lot of time relaxing with my book, while my boyfriend putted around the nine holes on site. And the food is definitely worth a mention – this package included complimentary breakfasts for each of us, as well as a complimentary three course dinner which was absolutely divine – some of the nicest food I’ve eaten in a long time.
I can’t say enough about what a lovely time we had in Wanaka – everything was just so, so perfect (and romantic!) and one day - if he EVEAR pops the question – I can see us coming back with our friends and family to get married – fingers crossed!
Edgewater lies right at the water’s edge of Lake Wanaka. It is the perfect destination for you to experience all that Central Otago’s seasons have to offer. Spacious rooms all feature lake views.
