Dunedin was a creative island in the 1960s and 70s, thanks largely to the collaborative opportunities embraced by the University of Otago's arts fellows.

Artistic endeavour has flourished in Dunedin since the establishment at Otago University of the Robert Burns (literature), Frances Hodgkins (visual arts) and Mozart (musical composition) Fellowships in the 1950s and 60s.

A wonderful example of collaboration between arts fellows was the monumental wall hanging that Ralph Hotere (Frances Hodkins Fellow, 1969) produced for the foyer of architect Ted McCoy's equally monumental 1980 Hocken Building. Hotere's work incorporated the text of 1969 Burns Fellow Hone Tuwhare's poem Rain

The hanging is absent now and the building has a new name - find out why on City Walks' Town & Gown walk.

The Town & Gown walk departs from the Knox Church steps, corner of George and Pitt Streets, 1.30pm Mondays - Saturdays.  Book direct or at the Dunedin i-SITE.
