The Octagon: beating heart of a revitalised city.

Planned by 1846, The Octagon took years to form, and its fortunes have waxed and waned with those of Dunedin.

The space seems to work now. It's not overly large, but then nor is the city, so it's a people-friendly place.

Many of the features which make Dunedin special are visible here: there's green space, and views of bush, hill and harbour; there's dignity and solidity in the buildings represented; there's sufficient sense of enclosure; and there are numerous references to the arts.

With its lively cafe and bar scene, The Octagon has become the beating heart of a vibrant, cosmopolitan city. See for yourself on our guided Old Town, Breakfast, and Heritage Highlights Walks.
