Winter Wonderland in Wanaka

It isn't too early to start planning your winter holiday for 2012. Wanaka comes alive during June to September as a snow sport lovers haven.

Lake Wanaka is a magical place to explore in the winter with the peaks of the Southern Alps dusted with snow and Lake Wanaka reflecting the beauty of the mountains.

Winter arrives in force around June each year and officially slouches away at the end of August.  Pleasingly she leaves enough snow on the ground for spring skiing in September.  There may even be fresh spring snow falls.  In 2011 the Wanaka ski resorts remained open until the end of September.

During the winter months, Wanaka is transformed into a snow sports lover paradise with a variety of places to go skiing, snowboarding and Nordic skiing. 

The closest ski fields to Wanaka are Cardrona Alpine Resort, Treble Cone, Snow Park and Snow Farm.  Coronet Peak and The Remarkables are about 1-1.5 hours’ drive away, so you have different choices each day on the mountains to go skiing and snowboarding.  Each of the ski areas have breath-taking views of the surrounding area and a variety of terrain to cater for all levels. 

Off the slopes visitors can choose from rejuvenating massages, leisurely activities, adventure sports and scenic experiences.   If your legs are just too tired or the slopes are closed for the day then try out Cinema Paradiso for a great movie or be fascinated by Puzzling World.

Alternatively, stroll around town and savour the flavours of Wanaka at the cafes and restaurants.  Sampling an Otago wine is a must while staying in Wanaka!   Pinot Noir is the signature grape of the region.
