The Amazing Race Asia

The chart-topping television show The Amazing Race Asia brought competitors to New Zealand for a taste of stunning scenery, culture and adrenaline. The teams, along with the well-known Singaporean based TV host Allan Wu, were blown away by the impressive landscape that surrounded them as they faced various exciting challenges in Auckland, the ‘City of Sails’, and adrenaline-fuelled Queenstown.

"The scenery here is so picturesque, so beautiful. There’s so much to do here in New Zealand, this is definitely adventure heaven," said host Allan Wu.

The first leg of the New Zealand race took teams around Auckland, including a stop at the relaxed seaside suburb of Devonport. They also got a taste of Kiwi sporting culture, attempting to rig a yacht or kick a rugby ball over goal posts.

The Sky Tower is one of the most visible landmarks in Auckland and, at 328 metres, is the highest tower in the Southern Hemisphere. It was a daunting challenge for the teams to climb to the 300 metre high crow’s nest. One person from each team also had to take a leap of faith - jumping off the platform at 192 metres.

In episode six, the teams first flew to Dunedin, a university town in the South Island, before starting their journey through the stunning Central Otago scenery to Queenstown. This golden heartland is an expanse of climatic extremes, dramatic landscapes, and breathtaking colour.

Once in Queenstown, they headed straight up the Skyline Gondola for a choice between the scenic and fun luge (a three wheeled cart), and the thrill-seeking jump off AJ Hackett’s Ledge Urban Sky Swing.

After a stop in the historic gold-mining town of Arrowtown, the teams headed out to Off Road Adventures to navigate their quad bike over a challenging course of steep hills, mud and tight corners.

The final hurdle was a jump off New Zealand’s highest bungy, AJ Hackett’s Nevis Highwire Bungy, at 134 metres, before heading to the pit stop at the cellar door of Chard Farm Winery.

Home to a population of more than one million people, Auckland represents the largest urban city in New Zealand and is recognised as having the largest concentration of Polynesian people in the world.

Auckland lies across an 11 kilometre wide volcanic isthmus separating two harbours - the Waitemata and Manukau - and is a water lover’s paradise with what is believed to be the largest boat ownership per capita in the world. In the Maori language, Auckland is known as Tamaki Makau Rau, the maiden with 100 lovers. It earned this name because it was a place desired by all and conquered by many.

Queenstown is located on the shores of Lake Wakatipu, overlooked by the Southern Alps. Queenstown offers relaxation at its best. Queenstown's reputation as the adventure capital of the world is well earned; you can choose to join in or watch the selection of safe, breath-taking activities such as bungy jumping from the world's first commercial bungy site the Kawarau Suspension Bridge, 43 metres above the crystal waters of the Kawarau River. You can also white-water raft, jet boat down canyons, tandem hang glide or parapente. Arrowtown is only a short 20-minute drive away.
