New Zealand through the eyes of ‘Bride Flight’

Bride Flight, a bittersweet movie about three young Dutch women and their search for a new life, whisks you off on a whirlwind tour of New Zealand scenery and culture. From the geothermal mysteries of Rotorua to the haunting moodiness of Hokitika, you’ll discover that New Zealand is a land of surprises.

Released in October 2008, Bride Flight is the most expensive Dutch movie ever made. Filmed mostly in New Zealand, its plot springs from the true story of an air race from London to Christchurch in 1953. As it recounts the lives of Marjorie, Ada and Esther - young Dutch women who hitch a ride to New Zealand on the KLM air race entrant - you’re taken on a picturesque journey around the North and South Islands.

If you were to plan a New Zealand adventure around the main filming locations, here are some of the places you could experience:

Christchurch and Lyttelton

The finish line of the 1953 air race, Christchurch today is both elegantly historic and refreshingly modern. You can explore the past by visiting heritage homes and admiring the architecture around Cathedral Square - the circular tram ride is an entertaining way to see the historic city centre. For a 360°view of Canterbury, take a hot air balloon ride from the base of the Southern Alps all the way to the Pacific coast.

New Zealand Through The Eyes Of 'Bride Flight'
Greymouth

In the movie, Ada and Derk live in the heritage gold-mining town of Greymouth for many years. The ultimate way to arrive in Greymouth is on the TranzAlpine Express - widely believed to be one of the most spectacular train journeys on the planet. North from the town is a coal mining heritage trail, or you can spend a day at Shantytown, which has a steam train, a working gold claim and a village of historic buildings from the gold rush days.

Marlborough

At the top right-corner of the South Island, Marlborough is New Zealand’s sauvignon blanc wine region. Frank and his Maori friend Mozie learnt about wine-making here, and so can you. There are about 70 wineries to discover - on a mountain bike or with a local driver. You can also arrange to go hiking, sea kayaking, fishing or cruising in the nearby Marlborough Sounds.

Lake Taupo and Rotorua

New Zealand’s volcanic regions feature in the movie as a 1963 weekend away. In the city of Rotorua, boiling mud pools, geysers, hot springs and authentic Maori cultural events combine to keep you entranced. Nearby Lake Taupo - a giant crater - is the place to develop your fly fishing and golfing skills. Kayaking, jet boating, horse trekking and quad biking are other ways to enjoy the dramatically beautiful environment.

Wellington and the Wairarapa

In Bride Flight, Wellington is Hans and Esther’s city of choice. As New Zealand’s capital, it’s full of history and cultural interest. A must-see here is Te Papa, New Zealand’s spectacular national museum. You can also enjoy a fantastic selection of restaurants - Wellington is obsessed with good food and coffee!

From Wellington it’s easy to escape to the Wairarapa region. Here historic towns will charm you with Victorian buildings and quaint museums. In Martinborough, where the three Bride Flight women stay a night in the hotel, wine is the key attraction. From the historic village square, you can walk to many of the local wineries.

Auckland

The city of Auckland is a key location in Bride Flight, and there are many ways to enjoy it. Catch a ferry to one of the gulf islands; hike to giant kauri trees in the forested Waitakere Ranges; pack a picnic and climb one of the city’s many extinct volcanic mountains; or cruise the cafés and designer shops in Ponsonby and Parnell. Most international flights arrive and depart from here, so you can enjoy some time in Auckland at each end of your holiday.

Quality all the way
