Who is Discover the World?
A passion for travel, an intimate knowledge of each of their destinations and a commitment to personal service are key ingredients in what makes Discover the World one of the UK’s leading specialist tour operators. For 25 years they have produced refreshingly different holidays to a selection of destinations around the globe from Iceland to New Zealand.
Discover the World, or Arctic Experience as it was then called, was founded in 1983 by Clive Stacey and Mark Leaney offering tailor-made holidays to Iceland and the Arctic region. Within two years it became market leader in holidays to Iceland and in 1988 a sister company, named Discover the World, specialising in unique wildlife experiences was added to the mix. DTW became the first company in the world to operate whale watching holidays in Iceland. As both grew, new destinations were introduced including Antarctica, and in 2001, New Zealand fulfilling a long-held passion for a country Clive had spent part of his childhood. Soon after, both companies united as Discover the World.

From strength to strength
Discover the World is the largest UK operator to Iceland and its specialist New Zealand programme has won numerous awards including winning Tourism New Zealand’s ‘Travel Specialist of the Year 2007’. Their New Zealand website has also won ‘Best On-line Product’ three times.
Today the company is still owned, managed and run by both Clive and Mark and specialises in tailor-made holidays.
"DTW continues to treat its clients as individuals and offer a tailor-made service for all our products. We don't just design and sell 'packages', we tailor them specifically for each individual".

On growing up in New Zealand
Clive was 4 years old when he first arrived in New Zealand, where he lived with his family for short time.
"Even at this early age the country made an indelible impression on me and though it was 40 years before I returned, I felt at home as soon as I touched down. Childhood memories of playing on black sand beaches, the wonders of the Waitomo Caves and the enchanting Mt Egmont (now known as Mt Taranaki!) streamed back and I couldn't wait to explore the country anew with adult eyes. Suffice to say I was captivated all over again, as I am sure you will be".
What are the best things about a holiday in New Zealand?
"The people are really helpful, friendly and very genuine and really make you feel welcome. There is so much contrast and it’s such a beautiful place. There are also plenty of activities, so it’s completely impossible to get bored!"
