Flight of the Conchords Back on Air

New Zealand’s biggest comedy exports, Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement, better known as the Flight of the Conchords, are back on Australian television screens over July and August.

The Grammy Award-winning pair, who bill themselves as "formerly New Zealand’s fourth most popular guitar-based digi-bongo accapella-rap-funk-comedy folk duo", have developed a cult following since their first series debuted on HBO in the US in 2007.

Band manager Murray, obsessive fan Mel and pawn-shop friend Dave are back and all get to share the singing stage in the second season.

Visitors enjoy some great comedy over a drink in Wellington, New Zealand.
The Conchords formed in 1998, after meeting at university in Wellington and sharing a flat. The pair was recently back in the capital after they finished filming the second series in the US.

For comedy fans heading to New Zealand, here’s Bret’s tip: "Thursday nights - that’s the big comedy night. So if you’re in New Zealand on Thursday night - go to Wellington. There’ll be a hundred people there."

The band’s real-life fans span all walks of life, with many resulting from Bret’s brief appearance as an elf in The Lord of the Rings.

When asked about what next for the duo and whether Bret would consider a role in The Hobbit, he says, "I am working on my toe hair".

Catch Flight of the Conchords: Season 2 on SBS, Mondays at 9.00pm until August 10, 2009.
