One of the world’s most marvellous gay ski weeksFrom 29th August to 6 September, Queenstown will live up to its name as hundreds of gay men and women from all over the world celebrate the joy of snow.Gay ski weeks have become something of a world phenomenon, and New Zealand’s week has made it to the top three. As an open-minded town with a taste for fun, Queenstown has embraced the concept of gay ski week and jumped right in, high-heeled boots and all. Novotel is the base campNovotel Queenstown Lakeside is the official base hotel for this year’s Gay Ski Week NZ. Poised on the edge of the lake, the hotel has a spectacular location that’s just a minute’s walk from the centre of town. Every day the Pink Ski Bus will shuttle skiers directly from the hotel to Coronet Peak and The Remarkables. There won’t be room for everyone at the Novotel, so several other hotels and apartment complexes have made it clear that they welcome gay guests. You’ll find a list of boutique accommodation providers on the official website. Snow fun on two skifields
A special feature on this year’s programme is night skiing, which is scheduled for Friday night. Coronet Peak’s M1, Shirtfront and Big Easy trails will be fully flood-lit from top to bottom, catering to every level of ability. Skiiers and boarders can romp under the floodlights with the stars sparkling above and the lights of Queenstown below - a magical night! Non-skiers will find plenty of alternative activities in and around Queenstown. There are day spas, golf courses, horse treks, mountain hikes, gondola rides and lake cruises, as well as a wonderful collection of retailers for designer-label shopping. Crazy party nightsTravelling light will be something of an impossibility for this event, because the party agenda is packed solid. You’ll need a western-themed outfit for the Cowboy Dinner at the Lone Star; something bright or sparkly for the Spectacular Spectacular, which will be held on a mountain top over-looking Queenstown; another attention-getting ensemble for Karaoke night at the casino; and an all-white outfit for the final White Out party. When you add these essentials to all your ski gear, those suitcases are going to be heavy!Absolutely awesome adventuresTwo ‘Big Gay Outs’ will throw adventure-seekers headfirst into Queenstown’s adrenalin scene. The most daring adventurers will opt for super-scary activities like skydiving and bungy jumping. Jet-boating is a good pick for anyone who wants a manageable dose of adrenalin. And for those who might have had a little too much fun the night before, there’s sailing on the lake. Here’s how the week will unfold:
