Ruud Kleinpaste - Nature ExpertThe most remarkable thing about Auckland’s landscape is the many extinct volcanic cones. Twelve of them are climbable, including Rangitoto - the island in the middle of Waitemata Harbour. Something of everything
Not far from Rangitoto is Tiritiri Matangi (Tiri), a conservation island that is being carefully revegetated with eco-sourced material. Tiri is New Zealand’s most accessible island sanctuary, and it’s home to several rare bird species, including the flightless Takahe. Gardens to admireI have three favourite gardens in Auckland. Eden Gardens, once a quarry, is planted with everything from camellias and conifers to palms and bromeliads. The Botanic Gardens in Manurewa is famous for its Gondwana Arboretum, which features trees that existed on the ancient Gondwana supercontinent. Ayrlies in Clevedon is, in my opinion, the best private garden in New Zealand - every corner is a surprise. Botanic events
Going nativeIf you’re short of time, Arataki Visitor Centre in the Waitakere Ranges is a quick way to get acquainted with New Zealand’s native flora. On one of the walking trails, trees are named. Also in this area is the Karamatura Valley Track, where you can hike to a waterfall and swim in the clearest, coolest water hole. On the west coast of Northland, Waipoua Forest is a brilliant example of a subtropical native forest. Tane Mahuta, New Zealand’s biggest kauri, is only five minutes walk from the road. Longer walks lead to other massive kauri trees. Puketi Forest, near Kerikeri, is where I go to watch kokako (a rare native bird). You’ll enjoy the seclusion - no trails of people, no parks full of cars. To hear kiwi, visit the Waitangi State Forest at night. Just sit and listen - the forest has the highest population of kiwis in New Zealand. Underwater gardensFinally, I recommend snorkelling at Goat Island near Leigh. The gardens underwater are just as beautiful as those above.
