Michael Cooper - Wine Expert

A west coast region with strong winds and high rainfall, Taranaki is almost devoid of vineyards. But people are starting to explore the region's inland river valleys to see if it is possible to grow grapes commercially.

A scenic waterfall in one of New Zealand’s many national parks and reserves.
This lush corner of New Zealand is renowned for its rich dairying. There's nothing more fitting than washing down a creamy Kiwi dessert with an excellent New Zealand sweet wine.

Just desserts

Dessert wines are very successful in New Zealand, especially those made from riesling grapes. Overseas judges who come here often comment on the high standard of our sweet white wines.

Most regions can produce good dessert wines in favourable vintages, but the majority come from Marlborough. There are well over 100 dessert wines made in New Zealand.

One sweet white wine that repeatedly shines in competitions is Villa Maria Reserve Noble Riesling. It's not cheap, at $50 for a half bottle. Selaks make a less expensive, yet very good, Ice Wine.

Taranaki highlight

I love climbing the slopes of Mt Taranaki, an almost perfect conical mountain, with a picnic and a chilled bottle of sauvignon blanc. In winter, take a red, a rug to wrap up in, and a guide!
