Moving around New Zealand, it comes as little surprise that Peter Jackson found the ideal setting for his ‘The Lord of the Ring’ trilogy. Throughout these islands, land and life has been shaped and woven together by volcanic activity. Although the South Island no longer has any active volcanoes, both main islands are dotted with volcanic vents and hot springs.
These hotspots emerge in the midst of the rainforest at Welcome Flat on the Copland Pass

track to the South Island West Coast. They appear beside the road at Sylvia Flats on the Lewis Pass, or at Maruia, south of Nelson. The alpine settlement of Hanmer Springs north of Christchurch has been built around hot springs.
