Moving around New Zealand, it comes as little surprise that Peter Jackson found the ideal setting for his ‘The Lord of the Ring’ trilogy. Throughout these islands, land and life has been shaped and woven together by volcanic activity. Although the South Island no longer has any active volcanoes, both main islands are dotted with volcanic vents and hot springs.

These hotspots emerge in the midst of the rainforest at Welcome Flat on the Copland Pass  more about the Copland Pass Trail]  track to the South Island West Coast.  They appear beside the road at Sylvia Flats on the Lewis Pass, or at Maruia, south of Nelson. The alpine settlement of Hanmer Springs north of Christchurch has been built around hot springs.

In the North Island it’s possible to follow a trail of thermal springs from just about one end of the island to the other.  Some are highly commercial spas. Others offer the simple pleasures of Hot Water Beach more about Hot Water Beach]  on the Coromandel Peninsula, where you can combine sand castle building with a hot bath.
