Auckland on Foot

Exercise the mind and body with a great day walk from Auckland. Try the Coast to Coast or Takapuna to Cheltenham walks.

Coast to Coast Walkway

Walk the city from the Tasman Sea to the Pacific Ocean coasts in either direction across the narrow isthmus of land that gives Auckland its maritime character.

This 16km trail climbs two of the city's famous volcanoes, passes through landscapes shaped by 600 years of Maori inhabitants, and showcases today's South Pacific city.

You'll see distinctive kauri villas, trees and birds, parks and gardens and two stunning harbours.

Allow four to six hours easy walking. Start and finish points are the American Express Viaduct Harbour and Onehunga Bay Reserve - buses run regularly in both directions for a convenient return journey. Visit one of Auckland's Visitor Information Centres for a Coast to Coast Walkway map.

Takapuna to Cheltenham Beach Walk

Auckland's North Shore boasts some stunning beaches and coastal scenery. Takapuna, with its cafes and shops, is a focal point just 10 minutes over the Harbour Bridge from the city centre.

At low tide, it is possible to enjoy a stroll along the white sand from Takapuna down through adjacent beaches towards Devonport, as far as picturesque Cheltenham Beach. This easy walk takes approximately one and a half hours. You can take a bus back to Takapuna, or a ferry from Devonport back to town.
