The GBR Challenge syndicate is backed by well-known British billionaire Peter Harrison, a rugby and sailing enthusiast, who sold his computer company and invested around NZ$30 million in living out his America's Cup yachting dream.

The Brits have taken on Greg Searle, an Olympic rower with gold and bronze medals to his name, as a grinder.

GBR spent its first training session in New Zealand last summer, sailing the two Japanese yachts they purchased from the now-defunct Nippon challenge.
