Team Dennis Conner

'Conner has much more money than last time. He has two boats instead of one, and he is very comfortable working with New York Yacht Club again. They will be strong contenders for at least the semi-finals,' says Bruno Troublé of Louis Vuitton.

Arguably the greatest sailor in America's Cup history, Dennis Conner is back for a ninth shot at the Auld Mug.

Conner will return with his trademark Stars & Stripes syndicate and two sparkling new boats, USA-66 and USA-77.

The only American to have twice lost the America's Cup is one of the crowd favourites in New Zealand and even owns a home in Auckland.

His love-hate relationship with the New York Yacht Club is back on again. The pair have reconciled and Conner has strung together a $US30 million campaign through a family of sponsors. Computer Associates is the primary sponsor.

Conner is unlikely to be seen behind the wheel these days. He has handed the job to Ken Read, who drove the last Stars & Stripes to the verge of the Louis Vuitton Cup finals in 2000.

Two-thirds of that crew have returned for another shot, and the Reichel-Pugh design team have also been re-employed to come up with a winning boat. The team have trained exclusively off the coast of Los Angeles.
