A day in Wellington
As soon as you arrive in Wellington you know it's a place that likes to do things differently. "Wild at Heart" is emblazoned on the front of the airport, where most airports would normally have the city name.
The best way to start your day is with an early morning coffee from one of Wellington's great inner city cafes. Coffee is big business in Wellington.
Experience New Zealand's national museum, Te Papa which gives visitors a hands-on and sometimes high impact learning experience. Te Papa is also home to contemporary and traditional Maori works.
From Te Papa walk along Wellington's waterfront (taking in the Wellington Writers Walk) and grab a bite to eat at Queens Wharf. Shed 5 and Dockside and both well-known for their uniquely New Zealand seafood. After lunch, immerse yourself in Wellington's social and maritime history at the Museum of Wellington City and Sea.
After two museums it's time to get some fresh air and what better place to do so than in 252 hectares of native flora and fauna at the Karori Wildlife Sanctuary. Thirty five kilometres of paths crisscross through the Sanctuary, offering peace and tranquillity just minutes from the heart of Wellington City.
Back in Wellington, catch the Cable Car to the Botanic Garden for stunning views of the city.
Wander down to historic suburb Thorndon. Stop in at Katherine Mansfield Birthplace, Old St Paul's and visit the original Treaty of Waitangi at the National Archives.
If you don't have time to look around by yourself, jump on board Hammond's Wellington Sightseeing Tours, the Wellington Rover or join a Walk Wellington tour.
No visit to Wellington is complete without exploring the restaurant precinct. With hundreds of eateries to choose from there's something for everyone.
After dinner, watch a show from ballet to stand-up comedy at one of the numerous other venues in town.
