Toi Whakairo ~
Maori Performing Arts

Toi whakairo encompasses both traditional and contemporary Maori performance and theatre.

Kapa haka (traditional song and dance) is common on marae and community venues throughout the country. Regional festivals are held on an annual basis and national competitions every two years. These events, lasting up to seven days, are very competitive, and feature some of the best Maori performers in the country.

Contemporary Maori theatre and dance may involve adaptations of traditional themes or interpretations of everyday life experiences.

Newspapers, magazines, radio, libraries and museums are all good sources of information about current and forthcoming Maori events and entertainment, as are Visitor Information Centres.
