Marae ~ Tribal Meeting Places
There are hundreds of marae throughout New Zealand which are the focal point for tribal meetings and family gatherings such as tangi (funerals), weddings and powhiri (welcoming ceremonies).
For visitors to New Zealand, a marae experience is most likely to happen as part of an organised tour, or by invitation from representatives of local iwi (tribes). On a marae, guests can either partake in a range of cultural activities or simply relax and enjoy the hospitality of their hosts.
Whether the marae is located in an urban or rural setting, staying with Maori is as much a spiritual experience as it is physical. Being part of the Maori lifestyle, culture and customs is an experience never to be forgotten.
