Whakahekenga ~ Origins

Whakahekenga refers to cosmological, mythical and scientific information related to the migration to, settlement in and occupation of Maori in New Zealand.

Visitors can learn about the origins of Maori from museums and cultural tourism operators who offer a variety of experiences in cities and towns throughout New Zealand. Marae (tribal meeting places) also provide cosmological and mythical background to the creation of Aotearoa New Zealand, as well as interesting stories and legends about the tribe connected to that particular marae.

Kaumatua and kuia (Maori elders, male and female) are a valuable source of information for matters pertaining to customs, protocols, histories and experiences. For example, many elders will recall the transition from Maori lore to that of European law and the effect this had on the individual, family and tribe. Sharing this knowledge also opens up korero (talk) of the vision Maori hold for the future, and an opportunity for both visitor and host to share personal experiences as members of a global community.
