Wairoa is the closest town to the beautiful Te Urewera National Park. If you’re planning to hike, hunt or fish in the park, it’s the best place to buy the food and supplies you’ll need. The town is spread along the banks of the broad Wairoa River and the riverside walk includes many interesting sites. For an insight into the district’s Maori and European history, visit the local museum. Wairoa offers comfortable accommodation and a choice of eating places. It’s a good place to find a guide for hunting and fishing expeditions. East of the town is Whakaki Lagoon, a natural wetland where you can watch wading and sea birds.
