Looking like a landlocked fiord, Lake Waikaremoana is wilderness at its best
Located within the boundaries of Te Urewera National Park, Waikaremoana is a name that encompasses both the lake and the settlement. The beautiful lake, which is sometimes described as ‘an inland fiord’, was formed about 2200 years ago by a huge landslide that blocked the Waikaretaheke River. The track around its perimeter takes three days to complete. A number of shorter walks begin close to the Aniwaniwa visitor centre and the motor camp. You can explore the lake by kayak or canoe, which are available for hire. Fishing is also an option – get a license from the campground store. Accommodation is generally basic – mostly cabins and camp sites.
Functional facts: Department of Conservation Visitor Centre, limited shopping, no restaurants.
