Transport options in Fiordland

Many visitors choose to leave all the driving to a tour operator while they're visiting Fiordland; others are strictly self-drive. It's also an option to combine the two - drive to Te Anau or Manapouri, then use local operators to whisk you to the fiords and tracks. A local guide will teach you much about the geology and history of the region.

Getting to and from Fiordland

By Road

Access to Te Anau is via State Highway 94 and the Southern Scenic Route. Both of these routes are fully sealed and well maintained.

The road from Te Anau to Milford is completely sealed and very well maintained, with a comprehensive avalanche maintenance program in place over winter. Drivers must note that all vehicles on the Milford Road are required by law to carry chains over the winter months.

Traffic lights at the Homer Tunnel control traffic flows over peak periods, and can create delays of up to 20 minutes.

The Milford Road is occasionally closed from Marion Corner, due to adverse weather conditions.

By Air

Air Fiordland Ltd and Wings and Water Te Anau Ltd provide air services to Te Anau and Fiordland. A Pioneer Airways DC3 also provides inbound charter trips three times a week in the summer.

By Coach

The following companies provide coach services to Fiordland:
Intercity, Topline Tours, Atomic Shuttles, Catch-a-Bus, Bottom Bus, Scenic Shuttle, Real Journeys and Great Sights.

Getting around Fiordland

The Invercargill to Te Anau portion of the Southern Scenic Route is a rewarding journey for cyclists, campervans and motorists. The 200 kilometre drive through Tuatapere takes approx 2 ½ hours by car and is sealed for the entire distance.

Within Fiordland, a variety of tours depart from Te Anau on a daily basis, providing transport to connect with various activities.

Coach and minibus options allow people to relax and enjoy the scenery along the Milford Road, while listening to commentary from experienced drivers. Most operators stop at key points of interest.

Personalised tours with local guides can show you the highlights of the region and unlock the secrets of the unique flora and fauna.
