Main Centres

Palmerston North is a sizeable city kept lively by a large population of university students. Enjoy the museums, restaurants and rose gardens.

Towns

Pause in the town of Bulls to check out the cafes, pubs, antique shops & humorous bull signs (look for ‘Relieve-a-bull’ if you’re after the toilet).
An important service centre for the Tararua region, Dannevirke is a pleasant country town with a strong Scandinavian heritage.
Try to visit Feilding on a Friday, to see the sheep and cattle saleyards in action. Then take a stroll around the restored Edwardian town centre.
Foxton is a town of many museums – learn about the flax industry, trolley buses, movies and sound, Dutch windmills and hand crafted dolls.
Pause in Levin for beach walks and bargains. At Waitarere Beach you can walk to a shipwreck; around town there are factory outlet shops to browse.
If you’re driving past Marton over summer, you’ll want to get lost in the amazing maize maze. Exercise your legs and your brain at the same time!
Pahiatua is a base for brown trout fishing. The nearby Makuri, Mangahao, Mangatainoka, Makakahi and Manawatu Rivers have top class fishing spots.
While travelling around New Zealand you might hear our native owls calling “morepork” at night, but in Shannon you can actually see some.
Every year Taihape celebrates the humble gumboot with a festival that includes a gumboot throwing event. Definitely something to write home about!
