Transport options in Manawatu

The Manawatu region is intersected by State Highway 1 and the main trunk railway line. It's also served by Palmerston North Airport. However you choose to arrive, you'll find it convenient to rental car or campervan for local explorations. The attractive country roads are generally well-maintained and easy to drive. It's very easy to base yourself in Palmerston North or one of the smaller towns and commute to local sights and activities.

Getting to and from Manawatu

By Road

The main road route from Auckland to Wellington provides direct access to places like Waiouru, Taihape, Mangaweka, Sanson and Levin.
An alternative route from Auckland to Wellington takes travellers through Taumaranui, National Park (Whakapapa) and Ohakune before connecting with State Highway 1 at Waiouru. An excellent bus service connects all of the region's districts. Cycling is a popular way to enjoy the picturesque country roads.


By Air

Air New Zealand provides daily flights from Palmerston North to Auckland, Hamilton, Tauranga, Wellington, Nelson, and Christchurch

Flying Times:

  • Auckland - 1 hour
  • Hamilton - 1 hour
  • Wellington - 35 minutes
  • Christchurch - 1 ¼ hours
  • Nelson - 1 hour

The airport is conveniently located five kilometres from the CBD of Palmerston North.

By Rail

Travel by rail is confined to one service - Auckland to Wellington. The trains call into Levin, Marton, Feilding, Palmerston North, Ohakune, National Park and Taumarunui. Services include dining, bars and panoramic views.
